When a dream feels important, it is natural to search for its meaning. Christian discernment means we do not accept every interpretation automatically. We test our conclusions carefully and humbly.

Test what you hear

1 John 4:1 says, “believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” In context, this addresses spiritual claims. Its call to discernment reminds us not to accept every claim without testing it.

Four questions to ask

• Does the interpretation agree with Scripture?
• Am I rushing to a conclusion?
• Have I prayed for wisdom? James 1:5 encourages us to ask God for wisdom.
• Have I sought wise counsel? Proverbs 11:14 highlights the value of counsel.

Do not let a dream control your decisions

Do not end a relationship, leave a job, accuse someone, or make a major financial choice based on a dream alone. Consider facts, responsibilities, Scripture, and wise counsel.

Practical exercise: Write two headings: “What I remember” and “What I think it means.” Keep details separate from assumptions. You do not have to force an answer.
