Christianity was never designed to be lived alone.
You can pray at home. You can read your Bible at home. You can worship God in your bedroom or listen to sermons online. But being able to worship alone does not mean God designed you to grow alone.
The Early Church Walked Together
โAnd they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.โ โ Acts 2:42 (KJV)
The early Christians learned the Word together, prayed together and continued in fellowship. Their faith was personal, but their Christian life was shared with other believers.
A sermon can teach you something important. A fellow believer can also sit beside you when you’re discouraged and remind you of God’s promises. We need the Word, and we need the people God uses to strengthen us.
God Calls Us to Encourage One Another
โAnd let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…โ โ Hebrews 10:24โ25 (KJV)
Sometimes you need encouragement. Sometimes another believer needs encouragement from you. Fellowship gives us opportunities to pray together, learn from mature believers, practise forgiveness and grow in love.
A Local Church Helps You Mature
Ephesians 4:11โ13 teaches that Christ gave ministry gifts to equip the saints and build up His body. A healthy church helps you understand scripture, develop character, discover your gifts and learn how to serve. Spiritual maturity requires learning, obedience and perseverance, not merely years of attendance.
Church Is a Place to Serve
First Corinthians 12 describes believers as members of one body. You may have a gift of encouragement, teaching, helping, organising, evangelism or prayer. A local church gives you opportunities to develop those gifts and strengthen others. The question changes from โWhat can this church do for me?โ to โHow can God use me to bless His people?โ
What If You’ve Been Hurt by a Church?
Church hurt is real. If you’ve been mistreated, seek wise counsel, take time to heal and establish healthy boundaries. Forgiveness does not mean ignoring abuse or returning to an unsafe environment. But the failures of some Christians do not mean every congregation is the same. You can look for a healthy, Bible-believing community where Christ is honoured, scripture is taught faithfully and leaders act responsibly.
Find Your Place in the Body
Don’t look for a perfect church. Look for a healthy church where you can grow, serve and build genuine relationships. God doesn’t only want you to receive encouragement. He also wants to use you to encourage somebody else.
Take a step this week. Visit a local church, worship, learn, build relationships and serve.
