A wedding can be planned in months, but a healthy marriage requires ongoing preparation. If you hope to get married, do not wait until you are engaged to start developing the habits that help a home thrive.
1. Grow in your faith
Develop a consistent personal relationship with God through prayer, Scripture and Christian fellowship. Do not expect a future spouse to carry your spiritual life for you. Learn to take responsibility for your own growth.
2. Understand your character
Identify the habits you need to strengthen. Are you patient? Can you receive correction? Do you keep your commitments? Galatians 5:22โ23 gives a useful picture of the fruit of the Spirit, including love, gentleness and temperance.
3. Learn to communicate
Practise listening without interrupting, expressing needs respectfully and apologising when you are wrong. Healthy communication does not eliminate every disagreement, but it gives you a better way to work through differences.
4. Build financial responsibility
Learn to budget, save and plan for major expenses. Be ready to discuss debt, spending, generosity, support for relatives and shared financial goals honestly. You do not need to be wealthy to prepare for marriage, but you do need a willingness to be responsible and transparent.
5. Understand your expectations
Think about children, work, household responsibilities, church life, extended family and where you hope to live. Discuss these matters with a potential spouse before making a lifelong commitment. Do not assume that important differences will disappear after the wedding.
6. Develop healthy boundaries
Learn to respect another person’s dignity, privacy and right to make decisions. Do not use pressure, guilt or threats to get your way. A healthy relationship should allow honest conversations and mutual consent.
7. Seek premarital counsel
When a relationship becomes serious, speak with a trusted Christian marriage adviser or qualified counsellor. Premarital counselling can help you explore communication styles, conflict, finances, family history and expectations before the wedding.
A simple 30-day preparation plan
- Week 1: Write down your core values and pray for wisdom.
- Week 2: Review your budget, commitments and personal goals.
- Week 3: Practise healthier communication in your existing relationships.
- Week 4: Speak with a mature mentor and identify the next area where you need to grow.
Final reflection
You cannot control when you will meet a life partner, and you cannot guarantee a perfect marriage. You can prepare yourself to make wiser decisions, communicate honestly and contribute to a healthy partnership.
Do not prepare only for a wedding day. Prepare for the ordinary days that make up a life together.
Prayer: Father, teach me to love with wisdom, live with integrity and prepare responsibly for the relationships You allow me to build. Help me choose well and become a faithful partner. Amen.
