Fasting is not a way to force God to obey us. It is a spiritual discipline through which believers set aside something for a time to seek the Lord with focused attention. Before beginning a fast, prepare your heart as well as your schedule.
1. Establish a biblical purpose
Ask why you are fasting. Are you seeking direction, repenting, interceding for others or setting aside time for focused prayer? In Matthew 6:16โ18, Jesus warns against fasting to gain public admiration. The purpose is to seek God sincerely, not to impress people.
2. Begin with repentance and humility
Do not treat fasting as a substitute for obedience. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal attitudes, habits or relationships that need attention. If you have wronged someone, be willing to make things right where it is safe and appropriate. Isaiah 58 challenges outward religious activity that is disconnected from justice and compassion.
3. Plan your prayer and Scripture time
Write down the people and needs you will pray for. Choose relevant Bible passages and leave space to reflect on what you read. A simple plan might include worship, Scripture, confession, intercession and thanksgiving. A plan helps the time you would normally spend eating or doing another activity become intentional prayer rather than empty hours.
4. Prepare practically and safely
Consider your responsibilities, work and health. Fasting practices vary, and not every form of fasting is appropriate for every person. If food restriction could affect your health, medication or medical condition, seek qualified medical advice and choose a safe alternative. No one should be pressured into a fast that puts them at risk.
5. Keep compassion at the centre
Fasting should make us more attentive to God and to people in need, not proud or harsh. Isaiah 58 connects true devotion with loosening oppression, sharing bread with the hungry and caring for others. Let your season of prayer lead to practical love.
During the fast
- Keep your purpose written down.
- Pray at planned times.
- Read Scripture thoughtfully.
- Remain humble and respectful towards others.
- Review what God is teaching you, without forcing an answer.
Prayer
Lord, purify my motives and help me seek You with a sincere heart. Teach me to pray with faith, obey Your Word and show compassion. Give me wisdom to fast safely and humility to give You the glory. Amen.
Take action: Write your prayer focus and the Scriptures you intend to read before you begin.
