You do not need to be a preacher to tell someone what the Lord has done in your life. A testimony is not a competition to prove that your past was worse than another personโs. It is an honest account that points people towards Godโs grace.
1. Explain what life was like before
Briefly describe the question, struggle or misunderstanding you were facing. You do not need to share every private detail. Be truthful and respectful of other peopleโs privacy. Your aim is to explain your journey, not to expose or shame someone else.
2. Explain how you encountered the truth of Christ
Describe what helped you understand the Gospel, turn towards God or grow in faith. Acts 26 shows Paul recounting his story while pointing to what God had done. Keep Jesus at the centre rather than making yourself the hero of the account.
3. Share what is changing now
Be specific about the difference faith is making. Perhaps you are learning to forgive, becoming more honest, praying consistently or seeking help with a difficult habit. Do not claim that every problem has disappeared if it has not. Honest growth can be more encouraging than a story that sounds perfect.
4. Keep it short and appropriate
Prepare a version that takes one or two minutes. Consider the person you are speaking to and the setting. Ask permission before sharing a sensitive story, and do not pressure someone to respond in a particular way. Respectful conversation builds trust.
5. Invite, do not manipulate
After sharing, you might say, โWould you like me to explain more about why I believe in Jesus?โ Listen to their questions. First Peter 3:15 calls believers to be ready to give an answer for their hope with meekness and fear. Gentleness matters as much as clarity.
A simple testimony outline
- What I was struggling with or seeking.
- How I came to understand and trust Christ.
- What God is teaching and changing in me.
- An invitation to talk or read Scripture together.
Remember that the power is not in dramatic wording. The Gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ. Your story can open a door, but the focus should remain on Him.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, give me courage and wisdom to speak about You honestly. Help me listen with compassion, respect peopleโs stories and point attention towards Your grace. Amen.
Next step: Write your testimony in four short sentences and practise sharing it naturally.
