There are seasons when opening the Bible feels easy, and there are seasons when the same pages seem difficult to enter. Your mind wanders. Prayer feels short. You read a chapter but struggle to remember what you have read. Do not immediately conclude that God has abandoned you or that your faith has failed.
Spiritual growth is not measured only by how strongly you feel on a particular day. A disciple learns to keep turning towards God, even when emotions are quiet.
1. Begin with a simple prayer
Before reading, ask the Lord to give you understanding and a willing heart. The psalmist prayed, โOpen thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy lawโ (Psalm 119:18, KJV). You do not need impressive words. Ask sincerely for help to understand and obey what you read.
2. Read a smaller portion carefully
When concentration is difficult, do not force yourself to rush through several chapters merely to finish a target. Read a short passage. Notice who is speaking, what is happening, what the passage reveals about God, and what response it calls for. Read the passage again slowly.
3. Look for obedience, not only information
Bible study is more than collecting facts. James 1:22 tells believers to be doers of the word, not hearers only. Write down one practical response. It may be to forgive someone, speak truthfully, pray for a person, correct a habit or encourage a family member.
4. Build a realistic rhythm
Choose a time you can protect. Keep your Bible and notebook ready. If you miss a day, begin again rather than allowing guilt to turn one missed day into a month of distance. Consistency grows through repeated, humble returns.
5. Study with other believers
A trusted Christian, pastor or Cell Group can help you ask better questions and remain accountable. Fellowship is not a replacement for personal devotion, but it can strengthen it.
Put it into practice today
Read Psalm 119:17โ24. Choose one verse, write what it teaches you and act on one clear instruction. If you need encouragement, explore more Bible teaching through the BCICHURCH website.
Prayer
Father, open my understanding and renew my desire for Your Word. Help me to read with patience, understand with humility and obey with courage. When my feelings are weak, teach me to remain faithful. In Jesusโ name, Amen.
Next step: Set aside ten quiet minutes today and read the passage without rushing.
