Jesus Is the Way: Finding Hope and Direction in Christ

By Levi Mahemu | Body of Christ International Church (BCICHURCH)

Have you ever reached a point in life where you didn’t know what to do next?

Perhaps you’re facing a difficult decision. Maybe you’re worried about your future, struggling with a painful situation, or searching for peace in the middle of life’s pressures. You may have tried different solutions, listened to different voices and asked several people for advice, yet something inside you still feels unsettled.

You’re not alone. Many people in Harare and surrounding communities are searching for direction, purpose and lasting peace. In the middle of all these questions, Jesus offers us a clear invitation. He doesn’t simply point us towards a way. He declares that He is the Way.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” — John 14:6 (KJV)

These words reveal something powerful about the Christian faith. Christianity isn’t merely about following religious traditions or trying to become a better person through our own efforts. At its heart, Christianity is about knowing Jesus Christ and following Him.

1. Jesus Is the Way to God

One of the deepest needs of the human heart is to know God. People may pursue success, education, financial stability, relationships and recognition. These things can have value, but none of them can replace a personal relationship with our Creator.

Jesus came to reconcile us to God. Sin separates humanity from God, but through His death and resurrection, Jesus opened the way for us to receive forgiveness and be brought into a relationship with the Father.

Our relationship with God isn’t built on our ability to earn His acceptance. We come to Him through Jesus Christ, trusting in what He has done for us.

You don’t have to pretend to be perfect before you approach God. You can come to Him honestly, confess your sins, ask for forgiveness and put your faith in Jesus. Your past doesn’t have to prevent you from beginning a new life with Christ.

Practical step

Take a few quiet minutes today and speak to God honestly. Tell Him where you have struggled. Confess your sins and ask Him to help you trust and follow Jesus. You don’t need complicated religious language. Begin with a sincere heart.

2. Jesus Is the Way When Life Feels Uncertain

Life doesn’t always follow the plans we make. You may be working hard but still struggling financially. You may be praying about your family, your career or your future without knowing what will happen next.

For many families in Harare and surrounding communities, daily responsibilities can feel overwhelming. There are bills to pay, children to raise, decisions to make and expectations to meet.

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” — Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

Jesus teaches us to put God first. This doesn’t mean Christians will never experience hardship or that every problem will disappear immediately. It means we don’t have to navigate life without God’s wisdom, presence and guidance.

When Jesus is at the centre of our lives, He shapes how we make decisions, treat people, manage our resources and respond to difficulties. Instead of asking only, “What will benefit me?” we begin asking, “What honours God?”

Jesus doesn’t promise that every road will be easy. He calls us to follow Him on the road that leads to life.

Practical step

If you’re facing a difficult decision, pray and ask God for wisdom, read Scripture for biblical principles, and seek counsel from a mature Christian who can help you think carefully. Faith means inviting God into the way you think, decide and act.

3. Jesus Is the Truth in a World Full of Confusion

We live in a time when people receive advice from many different sources. Social media offers opinions about success, relationships, money, identity and happiness. Friends may give conflicting advice. With so many voices competing for our attention, how do we know which direction to follow?

Jesus identifies Himself as the Truth. In John 8:31–32, He teaches that continuing in His Word makes us His disciples and that knowing the truth brings freedom.

The truth of Christ challenges us to examine our lives honestly. It teaches us to forgive rather than live in bitterness, practise integrity rather than deception, pursue purity rather than compromise, and love others rather than use them for personal gain.

Following Jesus also means allowing His Word to correct us. Spiritual growth happens when we become willing to learn and obey. Growth doesn’t mean that you’ll never struggle again. It means you’re learning to surrender more of your life to Christ.

Practical step

Read one chapter of the Gospel of John each day. As you read, ask: What does this passage teach me about Jesus? What does it reveal about my own life? What is one thing I can practise today?

4. Jesus Is the Way to a Life of Purpose

Many people spend years trying to discover their purpose. Some believe their purpose is determined by their career. Others measure their lives by income, achievements, possessions or public recognition. These things may be part of our lives, but they don’t fully define why we were created.

Jesus calls us into a life that reflects God’s character and purposes. In Matthew 5:16, He teaches His followers to let their light shine before others so that people may see their good works and glorify the Father.

Following Jesus should make a difference in how we live. It should influence how we treat our spouses, raise our children, conduct our businesses, serve our communities and respond to people who cannot repay us.

Purpose isn’t limited to standing behind a pulpit or holding a ministry position. You can honour God through faithful service in your home, workplace, school and community. We don’t serve others to earn salvation. We serve because the life of Christ is changing us.

Practical step

Ask yourself, “Who can experience the love of Jesus through my actions this week?” Identify one person you can encourage, help, forgive or serve. You don’t need to wait until you have more money or influence. Begin with what you have.

5. You Don’t Have to Walk the Journey Alone

Following Jesus is personal, but it was never intended to be a journey of isolation. God brings believers together so they can worship, learn His Word, encourage one another, serve and grow in faith.

Hebrews 10:24–25 reminds Christians to encourage one another towards love and good works and not to neglect gathering together.

A healthy church community provides opportunities to learn from Scripture, receive pastoral guidance, build meaningful relationships and serve alongside other believers. Church isn’t a gathering of people who have everything figured out. It’s a community of people who need God’s grace and want to grow in their relationship with Him.

At Body of Christ International Church, also known as BCICHURCH, our desire is to see people grow in Christ, discover their God-given purpose and become active in the work of His Kingdom. Spiritual growth involves more than attending a service. It includes learning God’s Word, developing a consistent prayer life, building healthy relationships and putting our faith into practice.

Practical step

Make a decision to become more intentional about Christian fellowship. Attend a church service regularly, join a Bible study or discipleship group, find a trusted Christian who can encourage you, and look for an opportunity to serve others.

6. How Do You Begin Following Jesus Today?

Perhaps you’ve realised that you need to take your relationship with God more seriously. Maybe you’ve never personally committed your life to Jesus, or you once walked closely with God but have gradually drifted away. Whatever your situation, you can take a meaningful step today.

Believe in Jesus Christ

Recognise that Jesus died for our sins and rose again. Place your trust in Him rather than relying on your own goodness to make you right with God. Romans 10:9 teaches that if we confess Jesus as Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead, we shall be saved.

Turn towards God

Repentance means turning away from sin and turning towards God. It means choosing to follow Jesus and allowing Him to transform your life.

Begin learning His Word

Start with the Gospel of John. Read a manageable portion each day. Ask questions, reflect on what you learn and put it into practice.

Connect with a local church

Find a church where you can worship, learn Scripture, receive pastoral guidance and build relationships with other believers. Don’t wait until you feel spiritually mature enough to attend. Church is one of the places where you can receive encouragement as you grow.

Your next step doesn’t have to be complicated. It simply needs to be intentional.

A Prayer to Begin Your Journey with Jesus

If you want to begin following Jesus or renew your commitment to Him, you can use this prayer to express your faith. Prayer isn’t a magic formula. What matters is your sincere response to God and your willingness to trust and follow Jesus.

Heavenly Father,

I come before You in the name of Jesus Christ. I acknowledge my need for You. I confess my sins and ask for Your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose again.

Lord Jesus, I put my trust in You. Teach me to follow Your ways, understand Your Word and live a life that honours You. Help me turn away from sin and grow in obedience. Give me wisdom when I face difficult decisions. Strengthen me when I feel weak, and help me remain faithful when life becomes challenging.

Lead me into healthy Christian fellowship. Help me become a person who reflects Your love, truth and character in my family, workplace and community. Thank You for Your grace and for the opportunity to walk with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you’ve prayed this prayer, consider speaking with a trusted pastor or mature Christian who can help you understand the next steps in your faith journey.

Final Thought: The Way Is a Person

There are many roads you can take in life. Some may lead to success. Others may lead to disappointment. Some decisions will bring opportunities, while others will teach you difficult lessons. But when it comes to knowing God and receiving eternal life, Jesus gives us a clear declaration:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.” — John 14:6 (KJV)

Jesus isn’t simply someone to turn to when every other option fails. He is Lord, and He calls us to follow Him in every area of our lives.

Let Him shape your decisions. Let His Word guide your conduct. Let His love influence how you treat people. And let your relationship with Him become the foundation upon which you build your life.

Take the next step. Seek Jesus. Learn His Word. Follow His teachings. Grow with other believers. The journey begins with Him.
