This is Part 8 of a 10-part series, How to Renew Your Mind: Word of God.
A city without gates can’t stay safe, no matter how strong its walls look. Your mind works the same way. You can pour the Word in every morning, but if everything else is allowed through the gates all day, the renewing never gets traction.
Keep Your Heart With Diligence
Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life (Proverbs 4:23). Diligence means ongoing, deliberate attention. God doesn’t say keep your heart when it’s convenient. He says keep it with all diligence, because everything in your life flows from it.
The Eye Gate
David made a decision about this. I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes (Psalm 101:3). Jesus said, The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light (Matthew 6:22). What you watch doesn’t stay on the screen. It moves into your thoughts, your desires and your reactions. If you keep feeding the eye what drains faith, you can’t be surprised when your mind feels dark.
The Ear Gate
Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners (1 Corinthians 15:33). That includes music, podcasts, gossip, the news you scroll through at midnight and the conversations that always end in complaining. Not everything you hear is sin, but everything you hear is seed.
The Company Gate
He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed (Proverbs 13:20). The people closest to you shape your thinking more than you realize. Wise friends sharpen your mind, and careless ones slowly dull it.
This isn’t about hiding from the world. Jesus ate with sinners (Matthew 9:10-11), and He was never changed by them. It’s about deciding what has permission to shape you.
A Simple Audit
- Write down what you watched, listened to and scrolled through this week.
- Write down the three people you spent the most time talking with.
- Mark each one as building faith, neutral, or draining.
- Remove one drain and add one builder this week.
Your Step Today
Start with one gate. Pick the one that feels weakest, the eye, the ear or the company, and make one clear change today. Small and consistent beats dramatic and short-lived.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, I set a watch over my eyes, my ears and my company. Show me what to let in and what to shut out. Help me keep my heart with all diligence, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Part 9 comes tomorrow: Peace for the Anxious Mind. Come back and keep going, and share this with someone who needs it.
