Altars are older than you think. Long before church buildings and pulpits, God’s people met Him at altars built from stone and dirt. Genesis 8:20 says Noah built an altar to the Lord as soon as he stepped off the ark. That single act tells you something. An altar isn’t decoration. It’s a meeting point between heaven and earth.
What an Altar Actually Does
An altar speaks. It represents something. It remembers something. It establishes something. And it carries weight across generations, whether that weight is a blessing or a curse.
Scripture shows us five kinds of altars: personal, family, church, evil, and the altar of the Lord Jesus Christ. Hebrews 12:24 calls that last one the blood of sprinkling, which speaks better things than the blood of Abel. Every other altar points back to this one, for better or worse.
Four Things Every True Altar Must Do
Not every altar built in the name of God actually functions the way God intended. Scripture gives a clear pattern for what a true altar does.
First, it worships God. Second, it establishes covenant, the way God cut covenant with Abram in Genesis 15. Third, it connects you to an encounter, like the one Noah had after the flood in Genesis 7:12. Fourth, it carries sacrifice, the kind Abraham offered in Genesis 22:9. Exodus 20:24 says plainly that wherever God records His name, He will come and bless His people there. That’s the whole point of an altar. It’s a place where blessing has a legal right to land.
When the Altar Turns Against You
Here’s the sobering part. Not every altar is on your side. Judges 6:25 and Deuteronomy 12:3 both describe evil altars, ones built to idols instead of God, and they don’t stay quiet. They produce patterns. Anti-marriage patterns. Poverty that won’t lift no matter how hard a family works. Premature death that keeps showing up in the family line.
Gideon had to tear down his father’s altar to Baal before God could use him. Abraham had to build his own altar in Genesis 15 instead of relying on his father’s. 1 Kings 3:3-5 shows Solomon offering sacrifices at high places before the temple was built, a reminder that even good men can get tangled up with the wrong altars if they’re not careful.
So how do you break an evil altar’s hold on your family? Scripture gives three weapons. Prayer, because 2 Corinthians 10:4 says our weapons are mighty through God for pulling down strongholds. The blood of Jesus, which Hebrews 12:24 and Revelation 12:11 both point to as the thing the enemy cannot answer. And a sacrifice on the altar of God, one that exceeds whatever your forefathers offered to their idols. Breakthrough is tied to sacrifice. If your ancestors gave much to darkness, don’t expect a small offering to undo it.
The Mysteries of the Altar
1 Kings 13:1-6 and 2 Kings 23:15-16 pull back the curtain on something most people never think about. Every altar has a territory it covers. Every altar has a priest maintaining it. And every altar answers to sacrifice, meaning it keeps functioning as long as something keeps feeding it.
That’s why tearing one down takes more than a wish. You eliminate the priest first, because the altar can’t function without someone tending it. Then you break the altar itself in half. Then, following the pattern in Hebrews 12:28, you deal with the priest’s belongings so nothing is left to rebuild from. Anything less and the altar can reassemble itself.
Build the Right Altar in Your Home
Every family needs a daily altar. Not a building. A habit. A set time where the household gathers to pray together, worship together, and remind each other who they belong to. It doesn’t need to be long. It needs to be consistent. Genesis 8:20 shows us that the first thing Noah did after his family survived judgment was build an altar. Before he planted a vineyard. Before he built a house. He built an altar first.
What altar is your family standing on right now? Whatever answer that stirs in you, let it be Genesis 8:20 all over again. Build the altar first.
