7 Mistakes Christians Make That You Should Avoid

Being a Christian isn’t simply about going to church.

It’s about following Jesus.

It’s about growing.

It’s about becoming more like Christ.

And while nobody gets everything right, there are certain mistakes that can weaken your spiritual life if you allow them to become habits.

The Bible says:

โ€œWherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.โ€
1 Corinthians 10:12 KJV

You need to examine your walk with God.

Not to condemn yourself.

But to grow.

Here are seven mistakes Christians make that you should avoid.

1. ๐Ÿ”ฅ ONLY PRAYING WHEN YOU HAVE A PROBLEM

One of the biggest mistakes is treating prayer like an emergency button.

Everything is fine?

No prayer.

A problem comes?

Suddenly you’re praying for hours.

God doesn’t want a relationship with you that only exists when you need something.

Jesus said:

โ€œMen ought always to pray, and not to faint.โ€
Luke 18:1 KJV

Prayer isn’t just about asking God for things.

Prayer is relationship.

It’s fellowship.

It’s surrender.

It’s thanksgiving.

It’s seeking God’s direction.

Ask yourself:

Would I still pray if I didn’t have a problem?

Develop a prayer life when things are going well.

Then you’ll have a foundation when difficult seasons come.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Don’t make prayer your emergency plan. Make it your lifestyle.

2. ๐Ÿ”ฅ READING EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE BIBLE

Many Christians spend hours consuming information.

Social media.

YouTube.

TikTok.

News.

Podcasts.

Entertainment.

But then struggle to spend even fifteen minutes reading Scripture.

That’s dangerous.

The Bible says:

โ€œAs newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.โ€
1 Peter 2:2 KJV

Your spiritual life needs the Word of God.

You can’t build a strong Christian life entirely on sermons you heard from somebody else.

You need to know God’s Word for yourself.

Start simple.

Read a chapter.

Think about what you’ve read.

Write down what stands out.

Pray about it.

Apply it.

You don’t have to read the whole Bible in one week.

But you need to start feeding your spirit consistently.

3. ๐Ÿ”ฅ ATTENDING CHURCH WITHOUT BECOMING PART OF THE CHURCH

You can attend church every Sunday and still remain disconnected.

You sit.

You listen.

You leave.

Nobody knows you.

You don’t know anybody.

You don’t serve.

You don’t participate.

You don’t build relationships.

That’s not the picture of Christian community we see in Scripture.

The Bible says:

โ€œAnd let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.โ€
Hebrews 10:24-25 KJV

Church isn’t only somewhere you go.

It’s a family you become part of.

Don’t just attend.

Connect.

Serve.

Give.

Pray.

Encourage.

Invite people.

Help somebody.

Use your gifts.

Don’t be a spectator when you were called to be a participant.

4. ๐Ÿ”ฅ COMPARING YOUR JOURNEY WITH SOMEONE ELSE’S

This is one of the easiest ways to lose your peace.

You see somebody else’s ministry.

Their marriage.

Their business.

Their house.

Their car.

Their followers.

Their opportunities.

Their finances.

Then you look at yourself and think:

โ€œWhy am I behind?โ€

But you’re comparing your chapter 3 to somebody else’s chapter 20.

God doesn’t write everyone’s story the same way.

Paul said:

โ€œBut they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.โ€
2 Corinthians 10:12 KJV

Your assignment is not to become somebody else.

Your assignment is to follow Christ.

Stop asking:

โ€œWhy don’t I have what they have?โ€

Start asking:

โ€œAm I faithful with what God has placed in my hands?โ€

Comparison will make you despise your own progress.

Celebrate others without abandoning your own journey.

5. ๐Ÿ”ฅ REFUSING TO FORGIVE

Christians can become wounded too.

People will disappoint you.

People will betray you.

People will say things that hurt.

Sometimes people will treat you unfairly.

But if you carry every offence, bitterness can begin controlling your heart.

Paul wrote:

โ€œAnd be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.โ€
Ephesians 4:32 KJV

Forgiveness doesn’t mean pretending nothing happened.

It doesn’t mean removing healthy boundaries.

It doesn’t mean trusting someone who has repeatedly harmed you without evidence of change.

It means refusing to allow bitterness to become your master.

Ask yourself:

Who am I still carrying in my heart?

Bring that person before God.

Ask God to help you forgive.

Some wounds take time.

But don’t make a permanent home out of an offence.

Release it to God.

6. ๐Ÿ”ฅ TALKING ABOUT FAITH BUT NOT LIVING IT

It’s possible to know Christian language without living a Christian life.

You can say:

โ€œPraise God.โ€

โ€œGod is good.โ€

โ€œI believe.โ€

โ€œI’m blessed.โ€

But your everyday life should demonstrate what you believe.

James wrote:

โ€œBut be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.โ€
James 1:22 KJV

Faith should affect your decisions.

Your relationships.

Your finances.

Your speech.

Your integrity.

Your work.

Your treatment of people.

Your private life.

Your public life.

Don’t only ask:

โ€œWhat did the sermon say?โ€

Ask:

โ€œWhat am I going to do about it?โ€

The goal isn’t simply to hear more sermons.

The goal is transformation.

7. ๐Ÿ”ฅ STOPPING YOUR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

You gave your life to Christ.

You started attending church.

You learned some Scriptures.

You became involved.

Then you stopped growing.

You became comfortable.

But Christianity isn’t supposed to remain at the same level forever.

Peter said:

โ€œBut grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.โ€
2 Peter 3:18 KJV

Growth requires intention.

You need to keep learning.

Keep praying.

Keep serving.

Keep asking questions.

Keep developing your character.

Keep becoming more like Jesus.

Don’t become satisfied with yesterday’s growth.

Ask:

โ€œWhat is God developing in me now?โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ THE BIGGER PROBLEM

These seven mistakes have something in common.

They can become habits.

And habits become patterns.

That’s why you need to examine your life regularly.

David prayed:

โ€œSearch me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts.โ€
Psalm 139:23 KJV

That’s a powerful prayer.

โ€œGod, show me what I cannot see about myself.โ€

Don’t be afraid of correction.

Correction can protect your future.

๐Ÿ”ฅ 7 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

Take a few minutes and answer these honestly.

1.

Is my prayer life growing or declining?

2.

Am I regularly reading and applying God’s Word?

3.

Am I connected to a healthy church community?

4.

Am I comparing myself with other people?

5.

Is there someone I need to forgive?

6.

Does my lifestyle match what I say I believe?

7.

Am I still growing spiritually?

Don’t answer these questions for somebody else.

Answer them for yourself.

๐Ÿ”ฅ YOUR 7-DAY CHRISTIAN GROWTH CHALLENGE

For the next seven days, focus on one area each day.

Day 1: Spend intentional time in prayer.

Day 2: Read Scripture before spending time on social media.

Day 3: Connect with someone from church.

Day 4: Stop comparing yourself with others.

Day 5: Pray about someone you need to forgive.

Day 6: Put one biblical principle into action.

Day 7: Evaluate your spiritual growth.

Then start again.

Christian growth isn’t a one-week project.

It’s a lifelong journey with Christ.

๐Ÿ™ PRAYER

Father,

Search my heart.

Show me the areas where I have become careless.

Forgive me for the times I’ve neglected prayer.

Help me hunger for Your Word.

Help me become more connected to Your people.

Deliver me from comparison.

Help me forgive those who have hurt me.

Teach me to live what I believe.

Give me a hunger to keep growing.

I don’t want to remain the same.

Make me more like Jesus.

Give me discipline.

Give me wisdom.

Give me humility.

And help me become everything You have called me to be.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
