Marriage is more than falling in love. It is learning to love, forgive, communicate, grow and choose each other, even when life gets difficult.
Marriage is one of God’s beautiful gifts to humanity. Yet anyone who has been married for some time will tell you that marriage requires more than wedding celebrations, beautiful photographs and romantic moments. It requires commitment, patience and two people who are willing to grow together.
In Harare and surrounding communities, many couples are navigating the pressures of raising children, managing finances, building careers, dealing with extended family expectations and maintaining healthy relationships. Sometimes these pressures slowly affect a marriage. Conversations become shorter, quality time disappears and small disagreements become major arguments.
But a difficult season does not have to become the permanent story of your marriage. With God’s wisdom, intentional effort and the right support, couples can learn to build healthier relationships.
1. Marriage Requires Two People Who Are Willing to Grow
Genesis 2:24 (KJV): โTherefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.โ
Marriage involves a decision to remain committed to one another. It brings together two different backgrounds, personalities, experiences and expectations. You may approach money, communication, parenting and conflict differently. Differences are not automatically a problem. The problem begins when differences become reasons to disrespect each other.
A healthy Christian marriage requires both partners to remain teachable. Be willing to admit when you are wrong, apologise when you have caused pain and make adjustments when necessary.
Put it into practice: Instead of asking, โWhy is my spouse like this?โ ask, โWhat can I do to become a better marriage partner?โ Growth begins when both people take responsibility.
2. Communication Can Build or Destroy a Marriage
Ephesians 4:29 (KJV): โLet no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying…โ
Some couples talk every day but rarely communicate meaningfully. They discuss school fees, groceries, bills and household responsibilities, but hardly discuss their feelings, dreams, fears or personal struggles. Over time, emotional distance can develop.
Your words matter. The way you speak to your spouse can strengthen the relationship or weaken it. Healthy communication involves listening, speaking respectfully and allowing your partner to express themselves without immediately becoming defensive.
Try this: Set aside 20 minutes each day to talk without distractions. Ask each other: How was your day emotionally? Is anything troubling you? What can I do to support you? What are we grateful for in our marriage? What should we improve together?
Sometimes your spouse does not need you to solve everything. They simply need you to listen.
3. Marriage Needs a Partner With Character and Conviction
A valuable part of marriage is having a partner who can stand by their decisions and take responsibility. A marriage becomes difficult when one partner constantly allows friends, relatives or outsiders to determine what happens in their home.
Seeking wise counsel is important. However, there is a difference between receiving counsel and allowing everyone to control your marriage. Genesis 2:24 teaches the principle of leaving and cleaving. Your marriage must become a priority.
This does not mean disrespecting parents or abandoning family responsibilities. It means understanding that marriage creates a new family unit that requires wisdom, boundaries and mutual commitment.
Put it into practice: Learn to make decisions together. When you need outside help, seek mature, trustworthy and wise counsel rather than turning private disagreements into public arguments.
4. Forgiveness Is Essential for a Healthy Marriage
Colossians 3:13 (KJV): โForbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.โ
Nobody enters marriage as a perfect person. You will make mistakes. Your spouse will make mistakes. Sometimes you will disappoint each other. That is why forgiveness is essential.
Forgiveness does not mean pretending nothing happened, accepting repeated mistreatment or ignoring serious problems. It means refusing to allow bitterness to become the foundation of your relationship. Healthy marriages require honest conversations, genuine apologies, changed behaviour and the willingness to rebuild trust.
If you have hurt your spouse, take responsibility and make the necessary changes. If you have been hurt, allow room for honest conversation and healing. Where there is abuse, intimidation or danger, seek appropriate professional and pastoral support. Your safety matters.
5. Put God at the Centre of Your Marriage
Ecclesiastes 4:12 (KJV): โAnd if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.โ
A Christian marriage should be more than two people sharing a house. It should be a relationship where both partners encourage one another to grow spiritually. Feelings and circumstances change, but God’s Word provides principles that help couples navigate different seasons of life.
Pray together. Study Scripture together. Attend church together. Learn to make decisions guided by biblical principles. Do not allow prayer to become the last option after everything else has failed. Make seeking God part of your everyday life.
Start simply:
- Pray together for five minutes every morning.
- Read one Bible passage together each day.
- Attend Sunday services together.
- Discuss one thing you have learned from Scripture.
- Pray for your children and your family’s future.
Small spiritual habits can help create a stronger foundation for your home.
6. Your Marriage Needs the Right Community
One mistake couples make is isolating themselves. They believe marriage is entirely private and that nobody should ever speak into their relationship. Privacy and healthy boundaries matter, but isolation can make it difficult to receive guidance, encouragement and support.
God designed believers to grow in fellowship. Hebrews 10:24โ25 (KJV) encourages us to consider one another and not forsake assembling together. Christian community provides opportunities to learn, serve, worship and grow together.
When couples become part of a healthy church community, they encounter biblical teaching, mature believers and opportunities to develop spiritually. You also discover that you are not the only people navigating the challenges of family life.
At Body of Christ International Church (BCICHURCH), we believe a healthy church should help people grow in every area of their Christian lives. We value families, relationships, spiritual growth and the importance of building homes founded on God’s Word.
You do not have to wait until your marriage is struggling before becoming part of a Christian community. Grow while things are going well. Build friendships. Learn God’s Word. Develop a prayer life together.
7. Five Things You Can Start Doing This Week
You do not need to wait for an anniversary or a special occasion to improve your relationship. Start with practical decisions:
- Appreciation: Tell your spouse three things you genuinely appreciate about them.
- Communication: Have an uninterrupted conversation. Listen without rushing to defend yourself.
- Quality time: Spend meaningful time together without phones, television or unnecessary distractions.
- Forgiveness: Identify an unresolved disagreement and make an intentional effort to address it respectfully.
- Prayer: Pray together. Commit your marriage, children, finances and future to God.
Do not underestimate small beginnings. A strong marriage is built through consistent decisions, not occasional romantic gestures.
Your Marriage Deserves Intentional Investment
Marriage is not a competition to establish who is more powerful, more intelligent or more important. It is a partnership: two people learning to love each other, serve each other, grow together and honour God through their relationship.
Do not allow the pressures of life to consume the time and attention your marriage needs. Do not wait until communication completely breaks down before learning to communicate. Do not wait until your spiritual life becomes weak before building a prayer culture in your home. And do not wait until your family is in crisis before finding a Christian community that encourages your growth.
Build your marriage intentionally. Build your home on God’s Word. Make Christ the centre of your family.
