Scripture: Matthew 28:19โ20; Acts 2:41โ42 (KJV)
A person responds to the gospel, receives prayer or visits church for the first time. Everyone celebrates, but then the week becomes busy. No one checks in. The person has questions but does not know whom to ask. A promising beginning can be left unsupported.
Jesus commissioned His disciples not only to make disciples but to teach them to observe His commands. Follow-up is therefore not administrative work alone. It is one way a church shows that people matter after the first moment of decision.
1. Make the first contact personal and respectful
Thank the person for speaking with you or visiting. Ask how they are doing and whether they would like help taking a next step. Do not assume they want repeated messages or public attention. Ask permission to contact them and respect their answer.
2. Listen before prescribing a programme
Ask what they understood from the conversation, what questions they have and what support would be useful. A person may need a Bible, help finding a service, someone to explain the gospel again or a safe place to discuss doubts. Do not embarrass them for not knowing church language.
3. Offer one clear next step
Too many instructions can overwhelm a new believer. Offer a simple next step: read a Gospel together, attend a new-believers class, meet a mature Christian or join a small group. Explain when and where it happens, who will welcome them and what they can expect.
4. Build a pathway, not dependence on one person
Connect the new believer with a church community and appropriate leaders. A healthy follow-up system does not make one worker the sole source of spiritual guidance. It helps the person grow in Scripture, prayer, fellowship and service while learning to depend on Christ.
5. Keep accurate and confidential records
Record only information the church genuinely needs, store it securely and limit access. Note the date of contact, the person’s preferred way to communicate and the next agreed step. Do not circulate sensitive details in public group chats. Review unresolved follow-ups regularly so people are not forgotten.
A simple follow-up rhythm
- Within 24โ48 hours: send a brief thank-you and ask how they are doing.
- Within the first week: offer a conversation or clear discipleship step.
- Within the first month: help them connect with a group or class.
- Ongoing: check progress, answer questions and encourage participation without pressure.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help us care for people with patience and wisdom. Keep us from treating decisions as numbers. Teach us to listen, follow through on our promises and help new believers grow in Your word and in fellowship. Amen.
