Key Scriptures: Matthew 5:16; 1 Peter 3:15 (KJV)
Some believers think evangelism belongs to the preacher with a microphone or the person who can quote many Bible verses. They remain silent because they fear being asked a question they cannot answer. Yet sharing faith can begin with a simple conversation, a clear testimony and a willingness to listen.
Jesus calls His people to bear witness to Him. That does not mean pressuring people or treating relationships as projects. It means loving people sincerely and being ready to explain the hope we have with gentleness and respect.
1. Begin with the person, not your speech
People are not arguments to win. They have questions, disappointments, family responsibilities and personal stories. Listen before you speak. Ask thoughtful questions, respect their experience and avoid assuming you know what they believe.
Good listening can open a more honest conversation than a rehearsed speech. You can ask, โWould you be comfortable telling me what faith means to you?โ Let the other person answer without interrupting or mocking their perspective.
2. Know your own testimony
You do not need a dramatic story to explain what Christ means to you. Prepare a brief account of your life before you understood the gospel, how you came to trust Christ and what He is teaching you now. Be truthful. Do not exaggerate events to make the story sound impressive.
A testimony is not a claim that every problem has disappeared. It is a witness to God’s grace and the difference Christ is making. Give Jesus the focus rather than presenting yourself as the hero.
3. Explain the gospel clearly
Keep the message centred on Jesus Christ: our need for forgiveness, His death and resurrection, the call to repent and believe, and the new life found in Him. Use Scripture carefully and explain unfamiliar church language. Give the person room to ask questions.
If you do not know an answer, say so. Offer to study the question and return to the conversation. Honesty builds more trust than pretending to know everything.
4. Let your conduct support your words
Jesus taught His disciples to let their light shine before others (Matthew 5:16). Kindness, integrity, patience and keeping your word do not replace the gospel, but they should not contradict it either.
How you handle disagreement matters. Avoid shaming people online, spreading rumours or using prayer as a way to control them. We are called to bear witness to Christ, not to manipulate decisions.
5. Invite the next step and follow up respectfully
You might invite a friend to a church service, offer to read a Gospel together or share an article that addresses their question. Ask permission before sending repeated messages. If they decline, respect their answer and continue treating them with dignity.
When someone expresses a desire to follow Christ, help them connect with a sound church community, learn Scripture and grow in discipleship. Evangelism is not only about the first conversation. It includes caring about the person’s continued growth.
Practical challenge
- Pray for one person by name.
- Start one genuine conversation and listen carefully.
- Prepare a truthful, two-minute testimony.
- Offer a respectful invitation without pressure.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, give me love for the people around me. Help me listen well, speak truthfully and explain the gospel with courage and gentleness. Let my conduct honour You. Give me wisdom to know when to speak, when to listen and how to support someone who wants to grow in faith. Amen.
