Progressing the Blessing: Stop Counting What's Missing and Start Moving Toward What's Promised

By Levi Mahemu | BCICHURCH

One step in the positive is always great. It doesn’t matter where you are right now. It matters where you want to go.

Listen to how most people talk. They spend their days complaining about the situation they’re in, and they hardly ever speak about the blessings they already hold. The mouth keeps reporting what’s missing while the promise of God sits waiting.

Abraham was once in that same place. God met him there and changed his view with one instruction.

“And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.” (Genesis 15:5 KJV)

If you want to walk in God’s blessing, this word is for you.

Change What You’re Looking At

Before Genesis 15:5, Abraham was looking at what he lacked. He said, “Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless?” (Genesis 15:2 KJV). His eyes were fixed on the empty tent.

So God brought him outside and told him to look up. The stars didn’t change Abraham’s circumstances that night. They changed his focus. A man who stares at his lack will talk about lack. A man who looks at the promise will begin to speak promise.

The psalmist gives us the same instruction: “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits” (Psalm 103:2 KJV).

Practical application: Write down five blessings you already have. Read them aloud tomorrow morning before you speak about any problem.

Speak What You Want to Have, Not What You Don’t

Our words follow our focus. The Bible says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” (Proverbs 18:21 KJV).

When the people of Israel complained in the wilderness, Scripture records that “it displeased the LORD” (Numbers 11:1 KJV). Complaining doesn’t move a promise forward. It keeps you camped in the place you were meant to leave.

God Himself is the example. He is the one “who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were” (Romans 4:17 KJV). He spoke to Abraham about a multitude while Abraham had no child. Faith speaks the end before the eyes can see it.

Practical application: For one week, catch every complaint before it leaves your mouth. Replace it with a statement of what you’re believing God for.

The Blessing Is Bigger Than You Can Count

Look at the stars again. You can’t number them, and that was the whole point. God was showing Abraham the size of the blessing.

Long before this moment God had already said, “I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing” (Genesis 12:2 KJV). Our God doesn’t give in small measures. Moses reminds us where the strength to prosper comes from: “But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant” (Deuteronomy 8:18 KJV).

That moment when you know there is nothing to stop you from progressing in blessing, that is the moment you stop begging and start walking. The stars are everywhere. The blessing is not short.

Practical application: Identify one area where you’ve been asking God for a trickle while He has promised a flood. Adjust your prayers, your plans and your expectations to match His promise.

Without Action, You Remain the Same

Here is the part many people skip. Seeing the stars is not enough. Abraham “believed in the LORD” (Genesis 15:6 KJV), and then he moved. He “staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God” (Romans 4:20 KJV).

James puts it plainly: “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone” (James 2:17 KJV).

Without action, you remain like that all the time. The blessing is yours for the taking, but it has to be taken. God told Joshua, “Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you” (Joshua 1:3 KJV). Notice it’s the place where the foot treads. The promise is given, and the foot has to move.

Paul shows the posture of a man who takes hold of his blessing: “forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14 KJV).

Pfakachika unone kuti hapana chinobuda here. Dig, and see for yourself that something comes out.

Practical application: Choose one action this week that matches your faith. Make the call, start the plan, plant the seed, write the first page. Then do the next one.

Memorable Words from the Message

  • One step in the positive is always great.
  • It doesn’t matter where you are. It matters where you want to go.
  • Speak what you want to have, not what you don’t.
  • The stars are everywhere. You can’t number them, so is your blessing.
  • Without action you remain like that all the time.
  • Act. The blessing is yours for the taking. Make it happen.

Conclusion

Abraham went from counting his lack to counting the stars, and he never finished counting. That’s the size of what God has prepared for you. Lift your eyes, change your words and take your next step. Progress is not waiting for perfect conditions. It’s waiting for you to move.

A Prayer for Progress

Father, thank You for the blessings that are already in my hands. Forgive me for the times I’ve complained more than I’ve thanked You. Today I lift my eyes to Your promise. Teach my mouth to speak what You’ve said and not what I see. Give me the courage to act on what I believe, one step at a time. I receive Your blessing and I walk toward it in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Don’t let this word stay on the page. Share it with one person who needs to stop complaining and start progressing. Then leave a comment below and tell us the one step you’re taking this week. If you’re in Harare or Domboshava, come and worship with us at BCI.
