Don’t choose a church by appearances alone.
Powerful preaching, excellent music and a welcoming atmosphere can be valuable. But a church’s health cannot be measured by appearance alone. Here are seven biblical principles to consider when looking for a local church.
1. Scripture Is Taken Seriously
Acts 2:42 describes believers who continued in the apostles’ doctrine. Look for teaching that handles scripture responsibly, explains biblical truth in context and encourages obedience. The Bible should not be used merely to support a leader’s opinion or silence honest questions.
2. Jesus Is at the Centre
Colossians 1:18 describes Christ as the head of the body, the Church. A healthy ministry directs people towards following Jesus, not merely admiring a personality or protecting a leader’s reputation.
3. People Are Growing in Spiritual Maturity
Ephesians 4:13 speaks of believers growing towards maturity. Look for discipleship: are people learning scripture and becoming more loving, honest, patient and responsible? Are new believers being helped to establish their faith?
4. Leadership Accepts Accountability
โNeither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.โ โ 1 Peter 5:3 (KJV)
Leadership is a responsibility, not permission to mistreat people. Pay attention to how leaders respond to concerns. Are they willing to listen, investigate fairly and address serious matters responsibly?
5. Fellowship Is Genuine
Acts 2:44โ46 describes believers sharing life together. Healthy fellowship goes beyond greeting people during a service. It involves encouragement, prayer and practical support while respecting privacy and healthy boundaries.
6. People Are Equipped to Serve
Ephesians 4:12 teaches that ministry equips the saints for the work of ministry. A healthy church trains people and provides appropriate opportunities for members to use their abilities responsibly.
7. The Church Reaches Beyond Its Walls
Matthew 28:19โ20 records Jesus’ command to make disciples of all nations. A healthy congregation shares the Gospel, makes disciples, cares about its community and demonstrates Christ’s love beyond its gatherings.
Choose Wisely, Then Participate
No congregation will meet every personal preference, and no church is perfect. Look for a healthy, Bible-believing community where Jesus is honoured, scripture is faithfully taught, leaders are accountable, believers are discipled and people are equipped to serve. Take time to observe, ask questions and pray for wisdom. Do not ignore serious warning signs, but do not leave over every minor disappointment either.
