How to Put God at the Centre of Your Relationship

If your faith is central to your life, it should also shape how you approach a relationship. Putting God at the centre is more than praying together or sharing Bible verses. It means allowing Scripture, character and wise decisions to guide how you treat one another.

Pray for wisdom, not just a spouse

It is good to pray for a life partner. Also pray for discernment, patience and the courage to recognise when a relationship is unhealthy. Prayer should not become a way to avoid facts or ignore warning signs.

James 1:5 says, โ€œIf any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of Godโ€ (KJV). Ask God to help you make decisions with a clear mind and a sincere heart.

Look for spiritual maturity in daily life

Spiritual maturity is not measured only by how loudly someone prays or how much Bible language they use. Look for honesty, kindness, humility, self-control and a willingness to receive correction.

Galatians 5:22โ€“23 describes the fruit of the Spirit. These qualities provide a helpful framework for examining your own life and observing whether the person you are dating is growing in Christlike character.

Let Scripture shape your conduct

Read and discuss passages about love, patience, forgiveness, faithfulness and responsibility. First Corinthians 13:4โ€“7 describes love as patient and kind, not proud or self-seeking. These words challenge us to practise love, not merely talk about it.

Do not use Bible verses to control your partner or silence honest concerns. Scripture should lead both people towards truth, humility and love.

Seek wise counsel

Trusted Christian leaders and qualified counsellors can help you talk through difficult subjects. Choose people who will tell you the truth with compassion, not people who automatically approve of every decision. Premarital counselling is especially useful for discussing communication, family expectations, finances and conflict.

Agree on healthy boundaries

Discuss boundaries that reflect your convictions and protect the dignity of both people. Do not allow pressure, guilt or fear of losing someone to push you into decisions you are not ready to make. Respect and consent matter in a Christ-centred relationship.

Put faith into action

  1. Pray individually for wisdom and character.
  2. Read a short Bible passage together and discuss its practical meaning.
  3. Talk honestly about church, faith and the values you want in your home.
  4. Seek counsel before making major commitments.
  5. Evaluate actions over time instead of relying on spiritual claims alone.

A God-centred relationship is not a perfect relationship. It is one where both people are willing to submit their choices to God, treat each other with dignity and keep growing in truth and love.
