Psalm 91: A Prayer for Protection for Every Day

You lock the gate, check the door, and lie down. But sleep does not come easy. You hear sounds outside. You think about the kombi you will catch at 5am, the children walking to school, the cousin who came home late last time and never said where he had been. The fear is not imaginary. It is real. But Psalm 91 gives you a prayer for protection that does not depend on how strong your gate is. It depends on where you dwell.

Why Psalm 91 Is for Everyday, Not Just the Hard Days

Psalm 91 is not a crisis-only prayer. It is a dwelling prayer. Verse 1 says, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” The promise is for the one who dwells, not the one who visits God only when trouble comes. Protection is not a once-off transaction. It is a lifestyle of abiding.

Think about your own week. Monday you are in a kombi on Mbare Musika road. Wednesday you are walking to the borehole. Friday you are at work late and the route home is dark. Every day carries its own risks. Psalm 91 is not reserved for the day you hear bad news. It is the daily covering for the ordinary dangers you already know about.

Verse 2 gives the foundation: “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” Notice the word “say.” Protection is not only something you hope for silently. You say it. You declare it. You speak it over your day before you step out of the house. Ndezvo zvaunofanira kuita: this is what you must do. Wake up and say, “Lord, You are my refuge and my fortress. Today I trust You.”

Praying Protection Over Travel and the Road

A minibus kombi travelling along a residential African street under stormy skies, representing the daily travel Zimbabwean believers pray over

Every time you get into a kombi, a bus, or a car, you are entrusting your life to a driver you do not know, a vehicle you did not inspect, and a road you cannot control. Psalm 91:11-12 gives you a specific promise for travel: “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.”

“All thy ways” includes the highway. It includes the kombi rank. It includes the gravel road to Domboshava at sunset. The angels God assigns do not only show up on Sundays. They are charged over your ways, your routes, your journeys.

Before you board the kombi, pray this:

“Father, I thank You for this journey. According to Psalm 91:11, I ask You to give Your angels charge over me to keep me in all my ways. Let them bear me up. Protect this vehicle, this driver, and every person travelling with me. I will not be afraid of the terror by night, nor for the arrow that flieth by day. I arrive safely in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Verse 5 says, “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day.” Night travel and day travel are both covered. You do not need to wait until you feel afraid to pray. You pray before the fear arrives. You pray before the journey starts. Then you travel under the covering you have already asked for.

Praying Over Your Home and Children

Psalm 91:10 says, “There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.” The word “dwelling” is your home. Your house in Domboshava. Your room in Highfield. Your flat in the city. God’s promise extends to the place where you live.

But notice the condition in verse 9: “Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation.” When God is your habitation, when He is the one your home is built around, the promise of verse 10 follows. You do not just lock the door. You invite the Lord to be the refuge of your dwelling.

Pray this over your home tonight:

“Lord, I make You the refuge of this home. According to Psalm 91:10, let no evil befall us. Let no plague come near our dwelling. Cover the door I have locked. Cover the window I have shut. Cover the children sleeping in the next room. You are our refuge and our fortress. We trust You tonight. Amen.”

Praying Over Your Children’s Walk to School

When your children leave for school, you cannot walk with them. But you can send the angels of Psalm 91:11 with them. “He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” That verse does not stop at adults. It covers every person who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, including your children when you pray them into that covering.

Before they walk out the gate, pray this over them:

“Father, I commit my children to You today. Give Your angels charge over them to keep them in all their ways. Let them bear them up. Protect their feet on the road, their minds in the classroom, their hearts among their friends. According to Psalm 91:10, let no evil befall them. Let no plague come near their dwelling, their school, their path. I cover them with Your truth, which is their shield and buckler. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Verse 4 says, “his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” A shield stops the attack. A buckler is the smaller, close-range defence. When you pray God’s truth over your children, you are not just wishing them well. You are placing Scripture between them and whatever the day may bring. The Unseen Battle: Praying Against Spiritual Attack

An open Bible glowing under a single light in darkness, representing praying Scripture against unseen spiritual attacks

Not every danger is physical. Psalm 91:5-6 names four threats, and some of them are invisible: “the terror by night,” “the arrow that flieth by day,” “the pestilence that walketh in darkness,” and “the destruction that wasteth at noonday.” The arrow that flies by day is not something you can see coming. The pestilence that walks in darkness does not announce itself. These are unseen attacks, and they require unseen protection.

Verse 13 goes further: “Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.” This is not a physical lion. This is the enemy who prowls. 1 Peter 5:8 warns, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” Psalm 91 does not tell you to run from the lion. It tells you to tread on it. You trample it under your feet through prayer.

When you feel a heaviness you cannot explain, when fear grips you without a reason, when your mind is under pressure and there is no logical cause, pray this:

“Father, I come under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress. No terror by night shall overcome me. No arrow that flieth by day shall strike my home. No pestilence that walketh in darkness shall come near my family. According to Psalm 91:13, I tread upon every lion and every adder. I trample under my feet every spiritual attack assigned against me, my marriage, my children, and my work. I will not be afraid. A thousand may fall at my side and ten thousand at my right hand, but it shall not come near me. I dwell in the secret place of the Most High. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Spiritual attack is real, but it is not stronger than the covering of the Most High. The same Psalm that promises angels over your journey also promises deliverance from the snare of the fowler (verse 3). The fowler sets traps you cannot see. God delivers you from them. If you are walking through a season of spiritual struggle after a deliverance, read After Deliverance, Build a New Life for practical steps on how to maintain your freedom.

The Promise God Makes Back to You

Psalm 91 ends with God Himself speaking. Verses 14-16 are His direct promise: “Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.”

God does not promise a life with no trouble. He promises to be with you in trouble. “I will be with him in trouble.” That is the promise. You will face situations that test your faith. But you will not face them alone. When you call, He answers. When you are in trouble, He is present. When the journey is long, He satisfies you with long life. That is His word.

Come as you are, we mean that. There is a place for you at BCI CHURCH. If you want to grow in your prayer life and learn how to stand on Scripture in everyday situations, join us this Sunday. Bring your Bible, bring your questions, and bring the fears you have been carrying alone.

Your Action Today

Write down one specific fear from this week. Find the verse in Psalm 91 that speaks to that fear. Pray that verse out loud over your situation today. Do not wait for the fear to grow. Pray the promise before the fear arrives.

Prayer for Protection

“Lord, teach me to dwell in Your secret place. I say of You today: You are my refuge and my fortress. Cover my going out and my coming in. Give Your angels charge over my children, my home, and my journey. Deliver me from the snare of the fowler and from every unseen attack. When I call, answer me. When I am in trouble, be with me. Satisfy me with long life and show me Your salvation. I trust You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pray Psalm 91 every day, or is it only for dangerous situations?

Psalm 91 is a dwelling psalm, not a crisis-only psalm. Verse 1 says, ‘He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.’ You can and should pray it daily, over your travel, your home, and your children, because protection is a lifestyle of abiding in God, not a one-time emergency request.

How do I pray for protection when I travel in a kombi or bus?

Before you board, pray Psalm 91:11-12: ask God to give His angels charge over you to keep you in all your ways. Verse 5 also promises you will not be afraid of the terror by night or the arrow that flieth by day, so you can pray with confidence whether you travel in daylight or darkness.

What does Psalm 91 say about protecting my children at school?

Psalm 91:10 promises that no evil will befall you and no plague will come near your dwelling. As a parent, you can pray this covering over your children’s school, their walk, and their classrooms. Verse 11 assures you that God’s angels are charged to keep them in all their ways.

Is Psalm 91 a guarantee that nothing bad will ever happen to me?

Psalm 91 does not promise a life without trouble. Verses 14-16 show God promising to be with you in trouble, to answer when you call, and to deliver you. The promise is His presence and His deliverance, not the absence of every difficulty. You dwell in Him, and He covers you in whatever you face.

How do I pray against spiritual attacks using Psalm 91?

Psalm 91:5-6 names unseen threats like the arrow that flieth by day and the pestilence that walketh in darkness. Verse 13 says you will tread on the lion and the adder. Pray these verses out loud, declaring that every spiritual attack against your home, your marriage, and your mind is trampled under your feet through the authority of God’s Word.
