10 Mistakes Christians Make That You Should Avoid

By Apostle Mahemu

Every Christian desires to grow in their walk with God, but certain habits can weaken our spiritual lives if we ignore them. Scripture calls us to examine ourselves and make sure we are growing in faith.

โ€œExamine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.โ€ โ€” 2 Corinthians 13:5 (KJV)

1. Taking Sin Lightly

Sin is not something to excuse or treat casually. Be honest about it, repent, and choose the way that pleases God.

Read: Romans 6:23

2. Ignoring the Voice of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit guides, teaches, and corrects us. Don’t harden your heart when He brings conviction or direction. Test what you hear against Scripture and obey God’s Word.

Read: John 16:13

3. Reading the Bible Only Occasionally

Don’t open the Bible only when you face a problem. Make God’s Word part of your daily life and allow it to shape your thinking and decisions.

Read: Joshua 1:8

4. Worshipping Only When You Feel Like It

Worship isn’t limited to good days or strong emotions. Learn to honour God in every season, even when circumstances are difficult.

Read: Habakkuk 3:17โ€“18

5. Living in Unforgiveness

Bitterness can damage your heart and relationships. Choose to forgive as Christ forgave you. Forgiveness doesn’t mean pretending wrongdoing never happened; it means refusing to let bitterness rule your heart.

Read: Ephesians 4:32

6. Leaving Sin Unconfessed

Don’t hide, excuse, or defend sin. Confess it honestly before God, repent, and take steps to turn away from it.

Read: 1 John 1:9

7. Staying Away from Fellowship

God never intended believers to grow in isolation. Stay connected to a local church, encourage other believers, and make room for accountability and service.

Read: Hebrews 10:25

8. Neglecting Prayer

Don’t make prayer something you do only when trouble comes. Build a consistent prayer life and learn to seek God in every season.

Read: 1 Thessalonians 5:17

9. Compromising Your Convictions to Please People

Don’t abandon biblical principles just to fit in or gain approval. Walk in love, but let your desire to please God guide your choices.

Read: Galatians 1:10

10. Hearing the Word Without Practising It

Knowing Scripture is not enough. Put God’s Word into action through your choices, character, relationships, and daily conduct.

Read: James 1:22

Take a Moment to Examine Yourself

Which of these mistakes do you need to address? Choose one area and take a practical step today. Spiritual growth begins when we respond to God’s Word.

Prayer

Lord, search my heart and show me every area where I have become careless in my walk with You. Give me the grace to repent, obey Your Word, and grow in spiritual maturity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
