Theme: The Jezebel Spirit
During the September to Remember services, Apostle Sibiya taught on the need for believers to discern spiritual opposition and remain submitted to God’s order. Using the story of Elijah and Jezebel together with the warning to the church in Revelation, the message examined patterns of intimidation, manipulation, false spirituality and resistance to godly order.
God Does Great Things Through People
Mwari havaite zvinhu neboka chete. Vanogona kutanga nemunhu mumwe chete, vobva vashandisa munhu iyeye kushandura chizvarwa. Moses was one man, yet God used him to lead Israel out of Egypt.
God also calls people who may appear unable and gives them grace and capacity to fulfil His assignment. Before God elevates a person, pride must be dealt with. Character must carry what calling attracts.
Apostle Sibiya also reminded the church that spiritual warfare doesn’t always come from outside the church. The enemy can seek to hinder God’s work through opposition, discouragement, deception and disorder within a religious environment.
Paul expressed this reality when he wrote, โSatan hindered us.โ (1 Thessalonians 2:18)
What Is the Jezebel Spirit?
The Bible presents Jezebel as a historical queen associated with idolatry, persecution of God’s prophets, manipulation and opposition to the worship of the Lord. In Revelation 2:20, the name Jezebel is also used in a warning to a church about a woman who called herself a prophetess and was leading believers into deception and immorality. ๎cite๎turn0search0๎turn0search5๎
For this reason, Christians should be careful not to use โJezebelโ as a casual label for people they disagree with. The biblical warning is about discernible behaviour and teaching that oppose Christ and lead God’s people away from truth.
Six Manifestations Discussed in the Message
1. It Can Support False Prophecy While God’s True Servants Are Opposed
In 1 Kings 17:6, Elijah was sustained by God during a difficult season. The wider account of Jezebel’s reign shows a hostile environment for the prophets of the Lord, while idolatrous religion was being promoted.
The lesson is that visibility, resources and religious activity don’t automatically prove that something is from God. The church must test teaching, fruit and spiritual direction against the Word of God.
2. It Intimidates God’s Servants and Attacks Their Confidence
After Elijah’s victory on Mount Carmel, Jezebel threatened his life. Elijah became afraid and eventually sat under a broom tree and asked that he might die (1 Kings 19:1-4).
Apostle Sibiya emphasised how intimidation can affect even a servant who has recently experienced a great victory. A believer can move from boldness to discouragement when they allow a threat to become bigger than God’s promise.
Never allow a voice of intimidation to define your future.
3. It Can Operate Through Spiritual Deception
The conflict around Jezebel was not merely political. It involved worship, prophecy and allegiance to God. Jezebel promoted Baal worship and opposed the prophets of the Lord. The account of Naboth also shows how religious language and authority were manipulated to accomplish an unjust purpose. ๎cite๎turn0search2๎
This is why believers need spiritual discernment. Not everything that sounds spiritual is necessarily from God. Spiritual language must never replace biblical truth.
4. It Is Controlling and Manipulative
Jezebel exercised influence through Ahab and through the systems around him. In the account of Naboth’s vineyard, she used authority, false accusations and manipulation to obtain what Ahab wanted. 1 Kings 21 records how Naboth was falsely accused and killed so that Ahab could take his vineyard. ๎cite๎turn0search2๎
Control is different from godly leadership. Biblical leadership serves, builds and protects people. Manipulation pressures people to produce an outcome that benefits the manipulator.
5. It Can Present False Spirituality as Prophetic Authority
Revelation 2:20 specifically warns about someone who called herself a prophetess while teaching and misleading God’s servants. ๎cite๎turn0search0๎turn0search7๎
This is a serious warning for the church. A prophetic claim must never be accepted simply because someone uses spiritual language. Prophecy must agree with Scripture, point people toward Christ and produce godly fruit.
6. It Resists Godly Order and Submission
One of the practical applications of the message was the importance of submission to godly leadership and church vision. If you belong to BCI, support the leadership and vision with a willing heart. Submission is not slavery. It is a biblical principle of order, humility and accountability.
At the same time, biblical submission must always remain under the authority of Christ and His Word. Healthy church leadership should not demand blind obedience or replace Scripture.
What Should Believers Do?
- Stay in the Word. Scripture gives us a standard for testing teaching and spiritual claims.
- Protect your confidence in God. Intimidation should not make you abandon your assignment.
- Reject manipulation. Don’t manipulate people, and don’t allow yourself to be controlled through fear, threats or spiritual pressure.
- Walk in humility. Pride can destroy what God wants to build through you.
- Respect godly order. Healthy submission produces accountability and unity.
- Test spiritual manifestations. Don’t accept every spiritual claim without biblical discernment.
- Keep your eyes on Christ. The goal is not to become obsessed with Jezebel, demons or spiritual opposition. The goal is to remain faithful to Jesus.
God Is Raising People With Capacity
One of the strongest lessons from the message was that God can take a person others consider incapable and give that person the grace to fulfil His purpose.
Don’t disqualify yourself because of where you are starting from.
Don’t allow intimidation to stop what God has called you to do.
Don’t let pride destroy the character required for your next level.
And don’t allow spiritual confusion to take you away from Christ, His Word and godly order.
God is looking for people He can trust with responsibility.
Stay humble. Stay discerning. Stay submitted to Christ. Keep moving forward.
