Roles and Responsibilities 2: God Does His Part, You Have a Part to Play

There are things only God can do, but there are also things God expects us to do.

Isaiah 43:18–19 says:

“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing…”

In this message from September to Remember, Apostle Mahemu teaches on Roles and Responsibilities and the importance of understanding our part in what God is doing in our lives.

God Does His Part, But You Have a Part to Play

God is sovereign, powerful and faithful. Yet throughout Scripture, we see God giving people instructions and expecting them to respond.

Our responsibility is not to try to do God’s part. It is to faithfully do the part He has given us.

Being Where the Miracle Is Doesn’t Guarantee the Miracle

In John 5, many sick people were gathered around the pool of Bethesda. Yet being in a place associated with healing did not mean everyone experienced healing.

Jesus found a man who had been sick for thirty-eight years and told him:

“Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.”

John 5:8 KJV

The man had a part to play.

Sometimes we’re praying for God to do something while ignoring an instruction He has already given us. We must learn to recognise what God is asking us to do and respond in obedience.

Recognise the Helpers God Sends

When God wants to lift you, He can send people who become instruments in the fulfilment of His purpose for your life.

But you need the eyes to identify your helpers.

Not everyone who comes into your life has the same assignment. Some people teach you. Some correct you. Some encourage you. Some open doors. Some help you grow.

Don’t miss what God is doing because you failed to recognise the people He has placed along your journey.

Church Attendance Is Not the Same as Following

There are many people who come to church, but there are fewer people who truly follow.

Elisha gives us a powerful example. He remained committed to following Elijah even when there were opportunities to stop along the way.

There is a difference between attending church and following what God is teaching you.

A follower listens, learns, serves, grows and applies.

A critic listens differently. Instead of asking, “What can God teach me through this?”, the critic looks for something to attack.

Following Produces Transformation

What you consistently follow will influence you.

Jesus said:

“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Matthew 4:19 KJV

Notice the progression: follow, be made, become useful.

Transformation happens as we follow Christ. If we continually follow Him, His Word and His ways, our lives should increasingly reflect what we’re following.

Your Service to God Is Not Forgotten

Sometimes you serve in church without receiving immediate recognition.

You pray. You evangelise. You welcome people. You teach children. You help with sound. You visit people. You give your time. You serve when nobody applauds.

Don’t think your labour is invisible to God.

“Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord…”

Ephesians 6:8 KJV

Your service to God matters. Keep serving with the right heart.

Let Go of the Past

Isaiah 43 carries another important instruction. Don’t allow the former things to dominate your vision of what God is doing next.

Some people are so consumed by what happened yesterday that they can’t see what God is doing today.

Yes, you’ve been hurt. Yes, people may have disappointed you. Yes, some things happened that you didn’t deserve. But your pain cannot become your permanent identity.

God says:

“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?”

If God is doing a new thing, we need the capacity to recognise it.

Bitterness and Unforgiveness Can Keep You Looking Back

Unforgiveness doesn’t change what happened. It can, however, keep your heart attached to what happened.

When you continually revisit old wounds, betrayals and disappointments, it can become difficult to recognise new opportunities for healing, peace and growth.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean pretending the wrong never happened. It means refusing to allow what happened to control your future.

What Are Your Roles and Responsibilities?

  • What has God instructed me to do?
  • What responsibility have I been avoiding?
  • Who has God placed in my life to help me?
  • Am I a follower or merely an attendee?
  • What am I doing in God’s house?
  • Am I serving faithfully even when nobody sees me?
  • What part of my past am I still carrying?
  • Is bitterness preventing me from moving forward?
  • What new thing might God be asking me to recognise?

God has His part. You have your part.

Don’t ask God to do what He has already given you the responsibility to do.

Prayer

Father, give me understanding of my role and responsibility. Help me recognise the people You have sent to help me. Give me grace to follow Christ faithfully, serve You with a willing heart and obey Your instructions. Help me release the pain of the past, forgive those who have hurt me and recognise the new thing You are doing. Give me eyes to see, ears to hear and courage to move forward. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
